SIGIA-L: IA mailing lists [SUMMARY]

>Can anyone recommend mailing lists which would be of interest to IAs -
>whether regular newsletters, discussion forums, periodical announcements,
>news flashes, or any other thing. Basically, any email delivered content
>to which an IA could S*bscribe.

I've managed to collect a mass of detail on a few dozen email lists.
Following is an over listing and then a brief summary of list, webpage,
and comments. I've also written these all up onto the IAwiki at
http://IAwiki.net/wiki/MailingLists, complete with instructions on how to
subscribe, location of archives, and reader comments. Please feel free to
update the wiki with further comments, your own lists, especially any
corrections.

=============================================================

Discussion Forums
-----------------

* SIGIA-L - the mailing list for SIGIA.
* http://www.asis.org/SIG/SIGIA/sig-ialist.html
* Discusses IA issues, news, views. A service of ASIST

* CHI-WEB
* http://sigchi.org/web/
* an ACM SIGCHI moderated discussion list on the human
    factor aspects of the World Wide Web.
* a moderated discussion list, lots of interesting
    discussion focussed more on HCI than IA.
* Has a community convention of sending SUMMARY postings
    which make searching the archives actually useful

* AIGAExperienceDesign
* http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AIGAExperienceDesign
* is an outgrowth of the AIGA's [Advance for Design]
    initiative and reflects that organization's historical
    emphasis on the traditional "design" disciplines.
* Not nearly as active as the SIGIA-L list but definitely
    interesting

* InfoDesign list
* http://list.design-inst.nl/mailman/listinfo/infodesign
* a moderated companion list to the InfoDesign-Cafe --
    lower traffic, higher quality (book reviews, conference
    announcements, etc).

* InfoDesign-Cafe list
* http://list.design-inst.nl/mailman/listinfo/infodesign-cafe
* The Cafe serves as a forum for unmoderated discussions
    of information design issues.
* subscribe: via a form at
    http://list.design-inst.nl/mailman/listinfo/infodesign-cafe
* sometimes overlaps the interests of IA.
* It is a very active list though sometimes a bit
    academic.

* DiscoveryProcess
* http://www.topica.com/lists/DiscoveryProcess
* A place to discuss studying customers in order to get
    new insights - whether those insights stand alone, or
    become implications for design, strategy, interactions,
    products, communications, whatever. What are we doing to
    understand something new about people, and how do we
    make sense of that...
* it's a general resource for user research - the kind
    that is done very upfront in any design process, not so
    much usability testing

* UTEST
* http://www.upassoc.org/html/utest.html
* In 1993, an electronic discussion group was formed to
    allow individuals working on usability testing research
    to discuss issues relevant to the conduct of usability
    testing.
* to subscribe: please contact Dr. Tharon Howard at
    mailto:tharon_at_hubcap.clemson.edu

* DIGLIB - a moderated list
* http://www.ifla.org/II/lists/diglib.htm
* The DIGLIB mailing list is for librarians, information
    scientists, and other information professionals to share
    information about the many issues and technologies
    pertaining to the creation of "digital libraries."
* audience: individuals and organizations from around the
    world who are creating or providing electronic access to
    digital collections

* ContentCritical
* http://www.gerrymcgovern.com/cc_forum.htm
* The Content Critical Forum is moderated by Gerry
    McGovern and is published 1-2 times per week. It focuses
    on the exploration of content and knowledge management
    issues.
* highly moderated content, more like a newsletter than a
    free-wheelin' forum

Newsletter or regular column
----------------------------

* Makovision's Cutting Through The Crap newsletter
* "Handpicked News And Links For Internet Developers"
* This is a bi-weekly newsletter. One is sent on
    Wednesday of each week, and a weekend edition sent on
    Saturday.

* UIEtips
* http://www.uie.com/
* low-volume e-mail newsletter where UIE share their data
    about the hottest usability issues.

* Friends-of-UIE
* http://www.uie.com/
* I'm not 100% certain this isn't the same list as
    UIEtips

* UIWEB's hfactor
* Essays on web design, interaction usability, experience
    architecture etc, by Scott Berkun
* http://www.uiweb.com/default.htm#archive

* FreshMeat
* FreshMeat is a semi-regular email column about the
    relationships between business, culture, technology,
    products, consumers, and so on. I hope that reading
    FreshMeat will make you see something differently.
    Simply making you smile will be close enough.
* http://www.portigal.com/FreshMeat.htm

* SearchToolsNews.
* Search Tools Consulting sends periodic mailings
    (approximately once a month) providing news about the
    search tools industry and changes to the searchtools.com
    web site.
* http://www.searchtools.com/lists/lists.html
* It's a little bit of a niche, but very much connected
    to IA.

* NewThinking by GerryMcGovern (formerly NUA)
* http://www.gerrymcgovern.com/new_thinking.htm
* broadly focuses on the role of written content on the
    Internet

* ResearchBuzz
* http://www.researchbuzz.com/
* a free weekly newsletter covering developments and news
    in the world of online research.
* excellent niche content!
* has the worlds greatest directory of searchable
    databases

Announcing Website Content
--------------------------

Where the main source is their website, and the email is an adjunct

* Xblog
* visual thinking links. The xBlog is a one-way list that
    goes out a few times a week. It's a great place to find
    (mostly) visual communication links: Visual thinking,
    web design, web development, art, creativity,
    information design, interaction design, graphic design,
    logos, symbols, typography, photography, information
    graphics, illustration, interface design, usability,
    technology, language, searching and more.

* AlertBox from Jakob Nielsen
* Current Issues in Web Usability
* http://www.useit.com/alertbox

* Sitepoint Tribune
* "This weekly publication covers everything you need to
    know about building, managing and marketing your Web
    site."
* http://www.sitepoint.com/newsletter/

* BLougList
* http://louisrosenfeld.com/
* Emailed versions of LouisRosenfeld's BLoug postings;
* subscribe: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blougList

* Hypertext News from EastGate
* http://www.eastgate.com/
* low-volume, moderated list of hypertext news and
    announcements.

Irregulars
----------

Occasional and irregular postings

* Gleanings, by ChristinaWodtke of ElegantHack
* http://www.eleganthack.com/gleanings/
* sometimes frequent, sometimes not, but always an
    interesting mix of IA and the eclectic

* BrainBox
* from ChallisHodge, another list worth reading.
* http://www.challishodge.com/

* Semantics
* http://semanticstudios.com/publications/
* PeterMorville's irregularly irreverent column about
    information architecture, strategy and management

* IAwikiNews
* http://www.IAwiki.net/wiki/IAwikiNews
* infrequent and irregular announcements of major new
    content or changes on the IAwiki. If you run an IA blog
    you will want to subscribe to this list.
